Despite severe protest demonstration by opposition members, the Punjab Assembly has approved a resolution against the Parliamentary Commission on New Provinces (PCNP).

Law Minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah moved a resolution against the formation of commission for creation of new provinces which was passed unanimously by the assembly.

The resolution was approved amid a severe commotion that began as the opposition parties started chanting slogans against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal asked the attendants how many backed the resolution after the law minister read out the text of the resolution.

The attendants, in a roaring voice, said yes and there was complete silence when the speaker asked if anyone opposed it.

It is vital to mention here that National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza formed a commission for the creation of new provinces in Punjab. However, the PML-N didn’t nominate its members of the PCNP.

Mirza had constituted the commission on the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari. Earlier, the National Assembly and Punjab Assembly had approved the resolutions for the establishment of new provinces in Punjab with an overwhelming majority.

Later, Law Minister while talking to the media criticized the protest of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP).

He said, “Look at the behavior exhibited by the PPP; this is the kind of democracy they want in the country. The entire country is witnessing that PPP does not have anything except for a handful of insolent women, who are sent to the forefront in order to cry hoarse”.

He condemned the behavior of PPP representative saying that opposition was given enough time to speak in the house. In his view, people will not only listen to you but also respect your words if one maintains decency while speaking in the assembly.

Rana Sanaullah added, “But, if you go to other people’s seats and attack them, then that’s not fair and should be condemned”.

He said that national commission instead of Zardari Commission should be constituted for new provinces, adding that the people of Southern Punjab would reject Zardari Commission.

It’s everyone’s right in democracy to protest, but it should be within the limits set by the rules, he remarked.
