Bollywood film ‘Barfi’ makes an official entry to Oscar!

Directed by Anurag Basu, the Indian movie ‘Barfi’, which featured the likes of Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D’Cruz and Rupa Ganguly, was indeed a treat for the audiences. Released on September 14, the film garnered positive response from almost everyone out there and now it is all set to make an official entry into the 85^th Academy Awards, which will take place in February 2013.

‘Barfi’, which is based on deaf and dump, will be sent as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film.

The decision to send the film to the Oscars was taken at a Film Federation of India (FFI) meeting, which was held in Hyderabad last Saturday night.

“Barfi! has indeed been chosen as the country’s official entry this year,” FFI secretary general Suparn Sen said.

The makers of the movie are pretty delighted with the decision and are hoping the best for their film.

“We are honoured that Barfi! has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. ‘Barfi!’ is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV, and it gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured from its inception has met with so much love from audiences and critics worldwide,” Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director – Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.

“An added source of pride is that this is the fourth UTV film in the last seven years to have been selected to represent India at the Academy awards; our earlier selections being Rang De Basanti (2006), Harishchandrachi Factory (2009) and Peepli Live (2010),” he added.

Made by a budget of 30 crore (US$5.43 million), ‘Barfi’ did quite well in India and overseas as well. The film grossed 8.56 crore (US$1.55 million) on its opening day and went on to generate 3.25 crore (US$588,250) in its first week, despite new release ‘Heroine’.

Well, all said and done, let’s wait and watch if the film also impresses the audiences at the Oscars.
