President Zardari vows to make Pakistan polio-free country

Vowing to make Pakistan polio-free country, President Asif Ali Zardari has said the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has taken on the challenge to eradicate the disease o from the country seriously.

While speaking to the media, the president hoped that Pakistan would overcome it with the support of the international community.

Earlier, President Zardari attended a high-level meeting on eradication of polio from the world, which was held on the occasion of 67th session of the General Assembly of United Nations.

He observed, “The dictators in the country in the past destroyed all the institutions including the organization fighting the issue of polio but now the democratically elected government had taken a number of steps to eradicate the country from polio.”

President Zardari assured the international community that the country would succeed and win in this campaign to eradicate this crippling disease from the society to ensure safe future of coming generation.

Bill Gates, Co-chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation applauded the efforts of Pakistani government to eradicate polio, assuring complete help and support in achieving the goals in this regard.

He noted, “It is a good thing that international donors like Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have been providing financial assistance and cooperation to Pakistan in the programme to eradicate polio and secure the future of the children.”

He also appreciated the conference on eradication of polio saying it was good that international community is serious in eradication of polio and there has been cooperation at global level in this regard.

Pakistan’s Goodwill Ambassador Aseefa Benazir Bhutto also addressed the meeting saying she was proud to take on the challenge to eradicate polio from the country.

She said, “I am much honored to be here among the important persons, who are working together to eliminate polio from the world.” She said that she was committed to make the country free from this disease.

Aseefa Bhutto continued that she is determined to carry forward the mission of her mother. In her view, there is no other way to secure the future of the country except making it a polio free country.
