Former world number one Venus Williams joins the winner circle – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams from United States, recreated her magic to outshine the Romanian star, Monica Niculescu, in straight sets at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the 25-year-old
to capture her first title since two and half years at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
The American icon entered this indoor hard court event standing at number 41stin the WTA Premier Rankings. She unleashed her true colours and eventually cruised to the final showdown.
Williams entered the title-round in high spirits and after ruling one hour and 23-minute marathon, she formulated a 6-2, 6-3 success. She dropped her serve once but cashed four out of seven break chances to rule the battle.
The 32-year-old commented in a courtside interview after grabbing the title:
"I had to work so hard to get to the final – the match against Andrea was so challenging, and the two matches before as well, and even my first round I had to stay really focused. Monica was in her second final here so she obviously feels really good on
this court. You have to hit five, six, seven shots more than usual. It can be frustrating. She’s tricky. You have to be ready. The score looked easy but the first set was 6-2 and like 42 minutes! You have to put a lot of balls back in the court against her.
It was back and forth, back and forth – I knew I just had to stay focused and keep fighting.”
After earning this victory, she grabbed her 44th career title and became second among active women to grab most titles. Her sister, Serena, stands in the top spot with 45 singles titles. The American also jumped to the 24th spot in
the WTA Premier Rankings.
