Leigh Howard eyeing the Tour de San Luis 2013

After quite a disappointing season that only brought one victory for Leigh Howard, the cyclist is optimistic to leave his past behind and start the new year on a high-note.

He sets his eyes at the Tour de San Luis and the cyclist is optimistic to find his winning ways earlier on the season by claiming podium at the Argentinean event.

“I want to go there and win. I have ridden the Bay Crits for a long time now and I’m itching to have a win so hopefully this will be the year,” he briefed to Cyclingnews.

“It’s [Bay Crits] certainly going to be a stepping stone towards the nationals and the European season”.

The 23-year-old marked his professional debut with Team HTC-Columbia in 2010 and stayed with the side by the end of 2011 season.

He accepted an offer from Shayne Bannan’s side, Team Orica-GreenEdge in 2012 and could not really help the Australian team during its first year at the World Tour level.

Howard’s only commendable performances in the season include a stage victory at the Tour of Britain along with the fourth overall finish at the race.

He was also part of the strong Team Orica-GreenEdge line-up that succeeded during the team’s time trail stage 2 of the Eneco Tour 2012.

To ensure his peak form for the Tour de San Luis, Howard will ride the Australian race, Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic to fine-tune before the six-day race.

Leigh believes that starting the season at the Tour de San Luis will certainly give him the required confidence for some of more serious goals of the season.

“We’ve already had one small training camp on the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago and there is another training camp in January for some of the guys who aren’t going to Tour Down Under – in Falls Creek and Bright,” he concluded.

Howard is best known for his sprinting abilities and his third place finish at the Tour de Romandie 2011 as well the stage victory at this year’s Tour of Britain stage to overcome Mark Cavendish is an excellent example of his abilities.
