There is quality and quantity in Australia to find my replacement, says Michael Hussey

Only a few days after Ricky Ponting’s retirement, another veteran Australian batsman, Michael Hussey, has called it a day. The national selectors now have a huge job to do, because the void left by two batting giants will be very hard to fill.

Hussey himself is not worried about the future, saying that Australians have the quantity and quality to find his replacement. The final Sydney Test against Sri Lanka will be Hussey’s last international appearance.

The experienced batsman has decided to retire at the peak of his career. The Aussies have very crucial 12 months ahead, as they are due to play consecutive Ashes series in the coming months.

"I’m not worried about the team whatsoever. We’ve got some fantastic candidates to come in — probably too many to name. Maybe (brother) David Hussey could get a run — one Hussey out, one Hussey in. History has shown players have come and gone. But the
game continues to move forward, and it’ll be no different with me," Hussey told reporters.

The selectors had to make some necessary moves after Pointing’s departure. Phil Hughes has been recalled, while Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja is likely to be part of the side. On the other hand, Glenn Maxwell has joined the squad, after Shane Watson was ruled
out due to fitness issues.

Hussey’s decision to hang his boots was quite shocking. Talking about his step, he explained that he decided to retire because of the family engagements, as he cannot afford to commit a six-month plus stint outside home next season.

Showing no regrets over his decision, Hussey described: "I do still love the game, but I’m not up to the rigours, pressures and stresses of international cricket any more."

The entire side expressed surprise over Hussey’s call. Mitchell Starc said: "He’s still in great form with the bat, as we’ve seen through this summer so far. He’s going out the way he wants by the sound of things, and it’s going to leave a big hole. It’s
hard to replace Ricky Ponting — now we’ve got to replace him and Mike Hussey, so it’s a big gap."
