The army said Saturday that six security personnel were killed in clashes with the militants after they launched a pre-dawn attack on a security check post in the northwestern Lakky Marwat district.

A security official said that the security forces killed 12 militants in counter attack in Srai Norang area of Luky Marwat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He said that eight security personnel were also injured in the clashes.

“Security forces foiled a bid of raid by terrorists at an isolated check post at Srai Norang in Luky Marwat and killed 12 terrorists,” the security official said in a statement
He said bodies of 4 terrorists, out of which 2 are wearing suicide jackets, are also in the custody of security forces. The official said the injured personnel have been evacuated to a military hospital in Peshawar and Bannu.

Correspondents in the area earlier said that the clashes started after armed militants attacked an army’s residential colony in Laky Marwat. They said nine security men were killed.

The sources said both sides exchanged fire for nearly two hours and used heavy weapons including rocket propelled grenades and automatic guns.

Sources said that some rockets also landed on nearby houses, causing casualties. Local TV channels reported that several people were killed when a rocket hit a house. There was no official confirmation of civilian casualties.

Troops from other nearby areas also rushed to the area to strengthen position of the forces at the camp.

The security forces made announcements through loudspeakers, asking the residents to stay indoors. The panic-gripped the area and locals said they heard huge explosions and heavy fire for hours.

The forces had cordonned off the area and did not even allow the police during the clashes. Traffic on the main Indus Highway, connecting Peshawar with Dera Ismail Khan, was also closed for some time, locals said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, launched at 3 a.m. The government blames Taliban militants for such attacks.
