Abdul Razzaq cites overconfidence as prime reason behind South Africa debacle

Veteran all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has termed overconfidence of the players as the main reason behind a terrible performance by Pakistan in South Africa.

Facing an embarrassing 3-0 whitewash, the Green Shirts completely failed to do anything special. They had a very good chance of winning the second Test, but failed to handle the situation.

Razzaq believes that Pakistan’s batting line-up was not well prepared to face South Africa’s pace attack. Taking to Geo Super, the all-rounder said, "I think overconfidence was the primary reason for the defeats."

Despite plenty of experience, Razzaq failed to make it to the squad for the South Africa tour. He, however, has a close look at the team’s performance, and said that after playing plenty of cricket in UAE and Sub-continent, the Cornered Tigers were not ready
to tackle the testing conditions of South Africa.

"I thought they were a bit overconfident about this series after doing well in the last two years against most teams. Unfortunately they were not ready for an informed South African pace attack," he stated.

“When I went to South Africa for the first time I had senior players like Wasim, Waqar, Inzamam, Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, Saeed Anwar to guide me and I did well there by reducing my backlift. On this tour, unfortunately the team missed seniors."

"Gul couldn’t play the third Test and it was hard on three new bowlers to play together against a top team like South Africa. When you blood new bowlers it must be in the presence of other experienced bowlers in the side. So I don’t blame the bowlers and
the same rule applies for batting."

After suffering a clean-sweep loss in the Test series, the Pakistan side is hoping for a better result in the limited-over cricket. The Men in Green are due to meet the Proteas in a couple of T20 games followed by five One Day Internationals (ODIs) next
month.
