Dimity Stoyle downs Sally Fitzgibbons to take out Burton Toyota Pro

Dimity Stoyle walked away victorious from the final of Burton Toyota Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star rated event, after prevailing over fellow Australian and current ASP World No.2 Sally Fitzgibbons.

The stormy conditions and six-foot waves on offer set up an exciting stage for the clash between the two local surfers, with the odds clearly favouring Fitzgibbons due to her huge experience and renowned skills.

However, Stoyle remained undaunted by her underdog status and managed to upheaval her rival, who also happens to be a really good of hers, to take the win.

“I can’t believe I won,” said an excited Stoyle after the final.”I could not hear the scores out there and it wasn’t until I came in that Sally (Fitzgibbons) told me I won – It was so cool that she chaired me up the beach – she’s a close friend and I really look up to her.”

Both the surfers had been nothing short of superb throughout the course of the week, doing exceptionally well to hold their own in conditions that kept putting their perseverance and skills to test.

After finally making it to the final, Stoyle opted for a conservative strategy while Fitzgibbons adopted a much more aggressive strategy, catching plenty of waves while hunting for a good score to seal the deal.

Scoring a 7.67 and 6.00 off her best-two waves, Fitzgibbons managed to get to a pretty decent heat-total of 13.67 points.

Stoyle opened her account after the heat passed its halfway stage with an 8.67-point ride. Backing it up with a 6.00-point wave, the Australian surfer registered a heat-total of 14.67 points, which allowed her to finish on top of Fitzgibbons and consequently secure the win, a feat that she would surely be cherishing for quite some time.

The top female surfers will return to action at Gold Coast, where the opening event of the 2013 ASP Women’s World Tour, Roxy Pro, is scheduled to start this Saturday.
