President Asif Ali Zardari holds meeting with top leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Lahore on Friday to discuss matters relating to the Caretaker setup.

The meeting is expected to finalize the recommendations regarding caretaker Prime Minister as the PPP’s government completes its five year term this month.

A meeting of the allied parties will also be summoned to give final shape to the proposed setup.

The PPP meeting has been called two days after Prime Minster Raja Pervez Ashraf formally asked the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) to propose names of persons for appointment as caretaker Prime Minister.

Under the constitutional provisions the government and the main opposition will nominate a consensus caretaker Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister sent a letter to leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Ch Nisar Ali Khan requesting him to propose two names for the caretaker Prime Minister.

“I would request you as Leader of the Opposition, to propose names of persons who in your opinion are eminently qualified to be appointed as care taker Prime Minister of Pakistan,” Prime Minster Raja Pervez Ashraf said in his letter.

It is imperative that we initiate the process under of the Constitution to arrive at a consensus on the appointment of care taker Prime Minister‚ who could uphold the national interest and ensure free‚ fair and transparent elections, he said.

The Prime Minister said that the country is now poised for general elections with the likely dissolution of the National Assembly on the expiry of its term.

The opposition leader says that two names will be formally conveyed to the Prime Minister in a couple of days.

The constitution says that if the government and the opposition failed to agree on caretaker prime minister, then the issue will be referred to the Chief Election Commissioner to nominate a person for the post.

Chief Election Commissioner, Fakhruddin G Ebrahim says he hopes that the matter will not reach him and that the gov’t and the opposition will reach an understanding on a consensus name.
