President Zaradri seeks report about attacks on Christians

President Asif Ali Zardari has condemned attacks on Christians in Lahore and sought report from the authorities.

Chief Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, ordered judicial inquiry into the torching of the houses of Christian community by a mob in Badami Bagh area on Saturday and suspended two police officers.

He told a news conference that terrorism sections will be included in cases against the attackers.

He also announced two lakh rupees compensation for each family taken notice of the Badami Bagh incident.

He has directed Inspector General Punjab to carry out a thorough probe into the incident and submit a report.

Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar said the President while expressing grave concern over the incident of vandalism has directed the concerned authorities to ensure safety and security of life and property of the citizens.

The President said safeguarding the rights of all citizens‚ Muslims and non-Muslims alike is one of the main responsibilities of the Government. It would continue undertaking every effort for protection of their rights as enshrined in the Constitution. He said such acts of vandalism against minorities tarnish the image of the country.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has also taken notice of the incident in Badami Bagh‚ Lahore.

Expressing deep concern over the incident‚ he directed to initiate an expeditious inquiry into it.

The Prime Minister also directed for taking measures to stop recurrence of such incidents in future. He said minorities are equal citizens of the land and must be given complete protection.

He said Islam teaches tolerance and assures protection to life and property of minorities.

Christians, whose houses were burnt staged protest demonstration after they returned homes.

Christians also staged demonstration against the incident in Karachi. Police used tear gs and fired in the air to disperse the participants.
