U.S. spy aircraft kills 4 in North Waziristan

An American spy aircraft killed at least four people in North Waziristan tribal region early Friday and killed at least four people, official sources said.

The sources said that the US drone fired two missiles on a house in Dattakhel Tehsil of North Waziristan Agency, when the people were asleep.

There was no information about the identity of those killed in the pre-dawn strike. Section of the media said that the slain men were militants.

The Friday attack occurred days after the visit to Islamabad of a UN representative who described U.S. attacks as violation of the sovereignty of Pakistan.

Ben Emmerson Q.C., the U.N. special rapporteur monitoring human rights in counterterrorism programs also remarked that there has been no “tacit consent by Pakistan to the use of drones on its territory.”

Attacks by unmanned US aircraft are widely unpopular in Pakistan, which says they violate its sovereignty and fan anti-US sentiment, but US officials are said to believe the attacks are key to its operation against the militants.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Thursday that it has conveyed its serious concerns at the American spy aircraft attacks to the UN representative during his recent visit to Islamabad.

The UN representative, who had also met US drones victims and people from the tribal regions, will present its report to the General Assembly.

“It is a good progress that a discussion has been started in the world on different aspects of drone attacks.  We are also in touch with the United States for stoppage of drone attacks,” the spokesman said.

He said Islamabad has a clear stand on U.S. drone attacks that these are counterproductive, illegal and violative of the country’s sovereignty.
