New York Yankees GM says Jeter likely to miss opener for 1st time since ’01

The New York Yankees will not have shortstop Derek Jeter’s services in this coming fresh season’s opener against the Boston Red Sox due to surgically repaired sore left ankle.

The Yankees general manager Brian Cashman recently commented in the media at Steinbrenner Field before a 7-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

“He is not ready for the full duty, so it’s obviously looking more likely than not that he will start the season on the [disabled list], The more realistic goal is April 6. Right now he is a little sore,’’ GM Brian Cashman.

Cashman added, “Now it’s toward the back, We are going to back off a bit. It’s not significant. It’s significant that we don’t have him yet, but there is nothing new going on other than the growing pains he has as he goes through the rehab.”

Jeter’s ankle was fractured in the Game 1 of last year’s American League Championship Series.

“It’s a goal, it doesn’t mean it’s an absolute, The season is coming quicker than that leg is going to be ready. We’ll give it the time it needs,” Cashman said on Jeter’s potential recovery.

He added, “I met with Derek Jeter today and told him what I think and he didn’t fight me on it. That’s reality, I know Derek extremely well and I can read his face and his face today tells me the reality of the circumstances is starting to sink in and the disabled list situation might be necessary. He knows time is short.”

Despite injury, the Veteran Yankees shortstop did a wonderful job by achieving consistent numbers of .316 hitting average along with 15 home runs, 58 RBIs and .362 OBP.

Along with a good past season’s record, Jeter is also considered one of the most prolific players still active in the league. His career hitting average of .313 along with 255 home runs, 1254 RBIs and .382 OBP also makes him a true offensive player.
