Acting U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan David D. Pearce has said the United States looks forward to free and fair elections that will result in the first civilian democratic transition in Pakistan’s history.

“This is truly an historic moment for Pakistan,” he said in a statement during his visit to Pakistan, the US embassy said Wednesday.

Ambassador Pearce congratulated Pakistan on its upcoming elections, the statement said.

Ambassador Pearce noted the importance of Pakistan’s support for the Afghan reconciliation process, including through the U.S.-Afghanistan-Pakistan Core Group. He said the U.S. wanted to continue this coordination in support of peace in Afghanistan as well as a secure, stable, and prosperous region.

He met Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani on Tuesday.

Ambassador Pearce arrived on March 26 from Kabul, where he had participated in the official visit to Afghanistan of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

He also met with Pakistani senators Mushahid Hussain and Afrasiab Khattak.
