A suicide bomber attacked a police van in Mardan district on Saturday and killed a police officer and injured several other persons, police said.

The bomber on foot struck the police mobile party in Katlang, a small town, some 90 kilometers from Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The police mobile team was on routine patrolling in the main bazaar when the bomber exploded his bomb, injuring a police inspector and six other people, including two policemen.

The police inspector, Khushdil Khan, later died of wounds in hospital.

The police later conducted search operation and killed a man, who was suspected to be facilitator of the bomber.

No group claimed responsibility. Taliban are blamed for attacks on security personnel.

It is second attack of security forces in the northwest in two days.

A Taliban bomber killed 12 people in Peshawar on Friday when he attacked a convoy of the security forces.

Taliban have increased attacks ahead of the May 11 parliamentary elections.

The Interior Ministry has warned in a report that Taliban and other banned extremist groups can launch attacks during election campaign.

Taliban have asked the people to stay away from the public meetings of three parties, which support the security forces’ operations against the Taliban.
