Militants kill five kidnapped security men near Peshawar

Suspected militants Tuesday shot dead five security personnel hours after they attacked a power supply station near Peshawar, police said.

The police found the bullet-riddled bodies in a field after they were informed by the residents.

The security men were kidnapped after the militants fired rockets on the grid station in Budh Berh area in the outskirts of Peshawar early Tuesday. A police guard and an employee of the state-owned Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) were killed in the attack.

The attack caused damage to the station, suspending power supply to most parts of Peshawar, officials said.

No group claimed responsibility.

The authorities blame Taliban for such attacks as they routinely target government installations in their anti-government campaign.

Attacks have increased in northwest Pakistan as electioneering for the May 11 parliamentary polls is gaining momentum.

The Interior Ministry has warned of more attacks by the Taliban and two other banned groups during the ongoing election campaign.

Taliban had asked the people to stay away from public meetings of three parties, which oppose their policies.
