Aitzaz resigns as senator, Wattoo quits PPP’s position

A day after Yusuf Raza Gilanni, Anwar Saifullah quit party’s position, two senior Pakistan Peoples’ Party Punjab President Manzoor Watoo resigned from the party post while senior PPP leader Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan announced his resignation from the Senate.

 

Manzoor Watoo accepted responsibility for the dismal performance in Punjab and resigned as the PPP Punjab president.

 

In the letter addressed to Bilawal, Wattoo listed the problems of water and electricity scarcity, economic instability and media trials as the reasons for defeat.

 

Aitzaz Ahsan resigned after his spouse faced defeat at a Lahore NA seat. Ms. Bushra Aitzaz could not find even third place in the contest.

 

Ahsan, announcing his resignation from the senate, said that the resignation should be accepted and the rest of the decisions were in the hands of the party.

 

Aitzaz Ahsan’s wife, Bushra Aitzaz contested and lost elections from the NA-124 constituency against Ruhail Asghar, a candidate from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).

 

According to Aitzaz Ahsan, voting results were bizarre as some polling stations had recorded a 150% voter turnout.

 

Results given by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be reviewed, he added.

 

Meanwhile, Sherry Rehman also resigned from her post as the Ambassador the US in a letter to the caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso on Tuesday.

 

Earlier, former prime minister and PPP senior vice president Yousaf Raza Gilani resigned from his senior party position on Monday.

 

“Someone needs to stand up and accept responsibility and I accept responsibility,” he said.

 

He made the announcement during a press conference at Multan press club on Monday, two days after his party failed to get a substantive number of seats in the May 11 polls.
