Govt rejects MQM call for Karachi troops’ deployment

The government on Tuesday rejected MQM demand for deployment of troops in Karachi in view of the poor law and order.

Minister of Sate for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad rejected MQM’s demand for handing over of Karachi to army in his speech in the National Assembly.

He said those called upon all the political parties to sit together to find a solution to Karachi’s deteriorating situation.

He said the political parties should also furnish recommendations to steer the country out of many challenges including terrorism. He said the government is determined not to intervene in the provincial matters but it will take them into confidence to deal with the confronting issues.

Earlier‚ Parliamentary Leader of MQM Farooq Sattar expressed concerns over the situation in Karachi and demanded that article 245 should be invoked for protection of lives and properties of the people in the metropolis.

Deputy Parliamentary Leader of PTI Shah Mahmood Qureshi asked the government to take the House into confidence over the law and order situation in Karachi.

Chief of AML Shaikh Rashid Ahmad said we do not want any confrontation with the democratic government but registration of a case against private media outlet is a matter of grave concern and notice should be taken of it.

Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah termed MQM’s demand for handing over Karachi to army as undemocratic.

He said MQM is also part of the Sindh government and it should not have made such a demand. Khurshid Shah said solution of Karachi situation should be found through negotiations.

Members belonging to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf‚ Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Awami Muslim League staged a token walkout from the House over the registration of case against a private TV channel and the deteriorated law and order situation in Karachi.
