PAKSAT-1R,Pakistan’s first Communications Satellite (PAKSAT-1R) offers innovative and cost effective data and internet services across Middle East, Africa and South Asia, officials say.

Launched as Pakistan’s Space Programme-2040 on August 11 2011is an advanced geosynchronous communications satellite operated, managed, built, and controlled by

Pakistan Space and Upper Research Commission (SUPARCO).

Official APP news agency quoted an official as saying the satellite has designated life of 15 years with initial targets to provide broadband Internet, digital television broadcasting, remote and rural telephony, emergency communications, teleceducation and telecmedicine services across South and Central Asia, Eastern Europe, East Africa and the Far East.

He said that the successful replacement of PAKSAT-1 with PAKSAT-1R has ensured continuity of service to various national and international customers including, TV broadcasters, Telecom operators, Data and Broadband Internet service providers as well as government organizations.

PAKSAT-1R is operating from orbital location of 38AA$ A East Longitude and is offering C and Ku band coverage in over 75 countries across Europe, Africa, Middle East, South and Central Asia, he said.

Official said using satellite, broadcast and telecommunications services are extended not only to the people in cities but also those living in small isolated islands and sparsely populated rural areas.

Moreover, terrestrial infrastructure is vulnerable to natural disasters while satellite links generally remain unaffected under such situations.

Satellite also distributes content faster than conventional oncline delivery. It offers last mile access, allowing content to be transmitted directly to users premises bypassing the congested terrestrial bottlenecks and multiple hops, he said.
