No extrajudicial step to be taken in Dr Shakil Afridi case: PM Nawaz Sharif

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has insisted that the case of Dr Shakil Afridi, the man who helped the CIA get their hands on Osama Bin Laden, is sub judice and court’s ruling will not be overturned in any case.

“In Dr Afridi’s case the court’s verdict would be the final thing for the government of Pakistan. It will not venture into anything that is above the ‘law of the land’ or extrajudicial”, Sharif said talking to media after arriving in London to attend World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF).

Dr Shakeel used the Polio Campaign to locate Bin Laden in Abottabad. He has since been charged with treason, and is serving a 33 year sentence. Despite mounting US pressure to release Afridi, Pakistan has been hesitant to cave in and it seems that the establishment here is under no mood to do so in the near future..

“We must exercise this prerogative according to what was in the best interest of Pakistan and not others. ”, Nawaz added.
