Water and Power Minister Orders Disconnection of 18 Government Departments

Abid Sher Ali, State Minister for Water and Power has ordered the  Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) to disconnect the electricity supply to 18 government departments with immediate effect on Tuesday April 29, 2014. The Minister said in a press conference in Islamabad that action will be taken to recover the unpaid electricity bills from defaulters.

The President House, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Parliament Lodges, official residence of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Sindh and Baluchistan House are among the 18 government institutions which are included in the disconnection orders.

The other government department which will stop getting electricity supply include National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) head office, Capital Development Authority (CDA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), environmental directorate, Punjab Jail, Motorway Police, and Pakistan Public Works Department.

The State Minister for Water and Power told the press conference that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif instructed to initiate the campaign against electricity defaulters and power thieves and strict action will be taken against them.

According to Abid Sher Ali following are the details of the amounts which different government departments owed to the electric supply company:

Prime Minister’s Secretariat  Rs6.2 million
residence of the Chief Justice of Pakistan   Rs1.1 million.
Capital Development Authority   Rs360 million
Parliament Lodges   Rs200 million
Sindh government  Rs56 billion

The Minister revealed that there are 6,000 illegal tube well connections in Baluchistan resulting in an electricity theft of  Rs70 billion. The Minister further said that Various public and private sector departments owed more than Rs3 billion to the  electricity supply company.
