Pakistan to Produce Additional 21,000MW to Combat Power Crisis

Pakistan will be producing additional 21,000 MW of power after the completion of power projects in coming years to combat the power crisis in the country. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif addressed a ground breaking ceremony of a coal power generation plant at Port Qasim in Karachi on May 6, 2014. The project will complete in five years and produce 660 MW of power.

Nawaz Sharif said that his government has been working relentlessly to plan and work out power generation projects to address the energy issue in the country. He further added that the current 660 MW project is an indication of his government’s commitment. The project will add 1,320 MW of power to national grid after completion of its all phases.

“We will eliminate darkness from this country,” Prime Minister said. “The severity of this crisis required day and night work on power projects, so that we could replace the darkness with lights.”

The power project is being constructed by the Power China and Al Mirqab Group, Qatar.

He said after completion of all the power projects, the total generation capacity will increase up to 21,000 MW.

Pakistan is initiating 10 coal-fired power projects at Gadani, Balochistan adding  a total of 6,600 MW to the national power production capacity.

Nawaz Sharif said, “It is our desire that we should have not only ample power at our disposal but also a cost-effective one so that a large populace can get relief.”
Prime Minister also mentioned about the planned power projects at other locations such as Jamshoro, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh, Sahiwal and Jhang.

“These energy projects are result of our successful foreign policy, which also shows the consistency perseverance in the Pak-China relationship,” he said.

“These are early harvest projects and will bear fruit in short time. Pak-China friendship will play a crucial role in stabilizing the economy of Pakistan as well as bringing peace and prosperity in the region,” he added.

Sindh Governor Dr Isharatul Ebad, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Ministers Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Ghulam Murtaza Khan Jatoi, Kamran Michael, Abid Sher Ali, Adviser to the Prime Minister and Chairman BOI Miftah Ismail were also present at the ground breaking ceremony.
