New assault to power in Libya

Retired-Libyan-Army-general Khalifa Hiftar

In as chaotic as the Libyan scenario is very risky to interpret the uniqueness of each of the many violent acts that occur daily. Still, it held that the military initiative of General Khalifa Hifter is superior to what has been happening since October 2011. During last week ‘s powerful militia led by the former opposition to Gaddafi has simultaneously launched an attack live in Benghazi against the Islamist militia known as Martyrs profile February 17 and the jihadist group Ansar al Sharia, and against the national parliament in Tripoli (where MPs were meeting with the task of confirming the new prime minister, Ahmed Miitig).

Presented by some as a coup and as a failed action, it is possible to interpret it in a different key. On the one hand, noteworthy that the weight of radical Islamism and jihadism has only increased since the demise of the Gadafi Jamahiriya, especially from Impulse rebel groups from Cyrenaica, where these flows have found greater support during the last decades. And that process is answered by more than six million Libyans.

Furthermore, the danger of the irreversible fracture if the country – with Tripolitania and Cyrenaica living not only back, but engaged in a historic confrontation now resurfaces as rebels seek East leaders consolidate power in the capital materializes leads some local actors to use the flag as the national flag unit engaging military way to stop that threat.

In the present situation there is no effective authority in charge, with ability to manage the economy and much less subject to myriad militias still active (in defiance of the general order issued disarmament already more than one year) or to ensure the safety of its inhabitants.

If the bet is successful Hifter, Libya could deal with some confidence the path of a gradual stability. But if it fails to immediate results can aggravate internal strife between political and military actors today are still dominated by the idea of “every man for himself.”

Khalifa Hifter, who spent his 30 years is the U.S. living next to the CIA has been the U.S.’s choice to overthrow the Islamists Libyans and install a pro-U.S. regime in Libya. In short, Khalifa Hifter’s military coup is a carbon operation to Iranian General Faziollah Zahedi who under the CIA plan TPAJAX Project, and a con-join British plan “Operation Boot” overthrew the Iranian Prime Minster Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953. Reports in press today reveal the U.S. forces have started arriving in Libya to train the Libyan Army, but I have no doubt the U.S. forces rush in to help Hifter solidify the takeover of the Libyan government.

Hiftar told reporters “If the people want me for president I will run for,” and that sounded like what Egyptian dictator General Sissi said when he overthrew Mohammed Morsi. I believe the U.S. didn’t like Islamists – either in Egypt or in Libya, and it has worked to oust them in both countries. But Libya is a tribal country, with Berbers in the south seeking autonomy, and with Islamist that won’t give up to Hifter without a fight. If the Misratan militias -the toughest of all- don’t join Hifter, they may become the center upon which other Islamist militias will coalesce, and a bloody civil war would certainly follow.

I see Libya becoming the New Algeria of the 1990’s, and the initial success of Hifer may be fleeting. One thing is certain: It ain’t over yet! Nikos Retsos, retired professor, USA
