Najam Sethi reinstated as chairman Pakistan Cricket Board

The Supreme Court suspended the notification of new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Governing Board and  Najam Sethi once again reinstated to the position of Chairman PCB on Friday July 11, 2014.

Two member bench comprising of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Saqib Nisar heard the appointment case of PCB chairman. Attorney General,  Salman Aslam Butt,told the court the Prime Minister wants to keep the new interim governing body set-up.  Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that does the prime minister has the power to act arbitrarily? Justice Saqib Nisar further said that the government’s a notification was akin to challenging the court’s authority.

The Court declared the new PCB constitution drafted under the chairmanship of Najam Sethi illegal as his appointment was challenged in the court.

Justice Saqib Nisar suggested that Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf both appointed as the member of the governing body. The Attorney General argued that the PCB constitution has no such provision, however,  Zaka Ashraf’s lawyer  Imtiaz Siddiqui had no objection to such arrangement.

Former PCB chairman Najam Sethi was also present in the Court during the hearing. Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said that both  Zaka Ashraf and Najam Sethi should be included in the governing body and whoever gets the majority will become chairman of the PCB. Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali asked Najam Sethi if he was willing to step down voluntarily.  Najam Sethi said that Prime Minister wants him to remain part of PCB and run for the PCB chairman elections.

The Supreme Court bench suspended the notification of the PCB Governing Board and restored Najam Sethi once again as the chairman PCB. The hearing of the case was adjourned until Monday.
