Khorasani group likely behind Lahore blast

Investigations are going on in the case of Gulshan-i-Iqbal blast in Lahore which took place on 27th March, 2016, and the initial reports have suggested that the Khorasani group may be the force behind this blast. The first analysis report of the blast was presented by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) and it suggests that the suspected suicide bomber belonged to the Khorasani group.
This group is an offshoot of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is known to carry out different terror activities in various parts of Pakistan. It is also a known fact that the Khorasani group of the TTP, is the most notorious one because it has leanings towards the Islamic State militant group.
The Gulshan-i-Iqbal blast claimed the lives of more than 73 people, while hundreds of others were injured. After the blast, the TTP (Jamatul Ahrar), shared a picture of the alleged suicide bomber, claiming responsibility of the Lahore blast.
Investigators recovered the body of the suicide bomber, but it was badly damaged and forensic experts were only able to recover the ear, which remained undamaged due to the blast. The Counter Terrorism Department sent the picture of the alleged bomber, along with the undamaged ear to PFSA to do forensic analysis.
“After performing morphological analysis for forensic image comparison it was concluded that the “ear” seen in the questioned photo matches with the “ear” seen in the reference photo”, the PFSA’s report disclosed.
It was also reported that the same conclusion could not be drawn for other facial features, as they were damaged beyond recognition.
Despite such a conclusive report, the police will not rule out other possibilities and options till the time the investigations are fully complete.
