Twelve serving Army officers sacked over corruption charges

It didn’t take long for the Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel to turn his words into action as 12 military officers were dismissed from their duties, just days after the General’s speech about eradicating corruption.

For the first time in the history of this institution, serving officers have been sacked for their involvement in financial corruption. This is being considered as a brave move by the army chief since it clearly shows that there are financial wrongdoings taking place in this prestigious institution as well.

According to the details provided, the sacked officers include a lieutenant general, a major general, five brigadiers, three colonels and a major. Amongst the most prominent names are; Lieutenant General Obaidullah Khattak and Major General Ejaz.

All these officers belonged to the Frontier Corps (FC) which is based in Baluchistan. So far, the nature of their financial wrongdoing and its extent has not been shared with the public. However, it was learnt that inquiry into this matter had been going on for the past one year.

This shocking development comes just two days after General Raheel Sharif said in an address that ‘across the board accountability is necessary for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan”. He also added that in order to root out terrorism, the first necessary step is to end corruption.

This move by the army chief puts extended pressure on bureaucracy to combat corruption taking place in this country. It also comes at a critical time as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif himself is embroiled in the Panama Papers controversy which included his family amongst those people who have undeclared offshore assets.
