Deceased MQM worker tortured while in Rangers’ custody: DG Rangers

Director General (DG) Rangers Major General Bilal Akber revealed that the deceased Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker, who died while in custody, was tortured by some Rangers’ personnel. This revelation came a day after Aftab Ahmed, a coordinator for MQM leader Farooq Sattar, was reported dead.

While talking to a local news channel, Akber accepted that Ahmed was tortured during custody and that in this particular case, standard operating procedures were not followed by some Rangers personnel. Ahmed was in Rangers custody for a 90-day period, for interrogation.

He further added that strict action will be taken against those who are responsible for torturing Akber. However, he did maintain that the MQM worker’s eventual cause of death was heart attack which occurred due to natural causes.

News of Aftab Ahmed’s death was first reported by MQM spokesperson Wasay Jalil through a tweet. “Aftab Ahmed died during Rangers custody as he was detained for 90 days for no reason,” the tweet read.

The Rangers released a statement after his death was reported, in which it was revealed that Ahmed complained of chest pain early in the morning, after which he was rushed to the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, he was unresponsive and was declared dead at 7:45 AM on Tuesday morning.

Post mortem has already been performed on the body in the presence of a magistrate, but the results are currently being held from public.

Meanwhile members of MQM party are furious over Aftab Ahmed’s death and are demanding a full probe into the matter.

“The death in custody is a cause for concern and we want a transparent investigation into the matter,” Farooq Sattar told a local news channel.
