NADRA to carry out verification of all CNICs again

Interior Minister, Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said on Wednesday that the Interior Ministry has decided to carry out the verification of all Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC) of Pakistanis again.

The decision comes after the Taliban leader, Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed in a US drone strike and a Pakistani CNIC and passport were recovered from him.

“Illegal CNICs has caused us to face an emergency-like situation,” Nisar said after chairing a high-level meeting with National Database Regulatory Authority (NADRA) officials. “Institutions responsible for national security will cooperate for verification and non-verification of CNICs,” he added.

It has been learnt that NADRA has issued over 45,000 CNICs to foreigners since 2005. The nationals of China, India, United States, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Uzbek, Maldives, Morocco, Bangladesh and Burma were issued these CNICs, putting the country on risk of terrorist activities.

A report revealed that 21 Chinese, 29 Indians, 236 Iranians, one American, 111 Bengali and Burmese, seven Moroccan, three Uzbeks, two Maldivians, one Senegal citizen, 13 Egyptian and around 40, 000 Afghans got Pakistani cards.

Just a few months back, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan had confirmed that over 0.23 million suspicious CNICs had been blocked by NADRA in the past five years. Most of these cards had been issued to Afghans.

It was also learnt that more than 650 officials of the database authority issued tens of thousands of CNICs to these foreign nationals. The wrongdoers will be dealt with severely and steps will be taken to curtail this practice so that the safety of the country is maintained.
