Sessions at the National Assembly are often marred with a lot of drama and yesterday’s session also created quite a stir. During Wednesday’s session, Minister of Power and Water Khwaja Asif called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shireen Mazari a ‘tractor trolley’.

According to the details of the incident, Asif was speaking at the session and praising the government for reducing load shedding during Ramzan when Mazari interrupted him mid-way. Asif said; “Thank God citizens are doing Iftar, Sehri and performing Taraweeh in peace. Citizens are breathing a sigh of relief due to reduced load shedding.” Mid-sentence, the opposition started booing and Asif had to pause his speech.

The speaker of the NA, Ayaz Sadiq asked the opposition to wait for their turn and he specifically asked Shireen Mazari to remain seated. When Mazari refused to comply and kept interrupting Asif’s speech, the later lost his patience. An irritated Asif asked the speaker to request this “tractor trolley to shut up”. He mocked Mazari’s voice and said, “Can you make this male voice female sounding?”

Upon these remarks the opposition burst into an angry outcry and PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi openly protested in the assembly. He said that Asif’s words were very inappropriate and that he should take them back and apologize to Mazari.

Mazari herself did not say anything during the session, but later she talked to a news channel and said; “Khwaja Asif should learn to respect women. If a male opposition member protests it is considered okay, but if a female member speaks up he gets offended.”
