Boy With Muscular Dystrophy Meets John Cena

Tanzilur Rehman, a seventeen-year-old would never have believed that he would meet his favorite icon, John Cena and get to watch him fight at a Real American Wresting (RAW) event. His dream came through when Make-A-Wish Foundation decided to do something about his wish.

Suffering from muscular dystrophy, Rehman is a fan of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champion and has being a consistent watcher of Cena’s fights since 2010.

Sitting in his customized wheel chair, Rehman admits “I watch every match of his regardless of the time it gets aired in Pakistan and, if I miss a match, I watch it online.”

His condition was discovered when he was 2-years-old and his parents noticed that he had problems walking.

Rehman’s father, Hafiz Azeem recollects that “We took him to a doctor and he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.”

He claims, “Many researches and past cases suggest that patients suffering from this ailment cannot live for more than 20 years.”

Although Rehman is unable to move his hand, he is still able to talk. He attended Defence Authority Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed School till class three but because of his condition, he was unable to continue.

“We got him admitted into Iqra School instead, where he became a hafiz,” said Azeem.

According to his father, he was an intelligent son and held a position at school… “After leaving school and completing his Quranic education, he now studies online with the help of his elder sister, Nimra, and younger brother, Kashan.”

Nimra added that they give no opportunity to feel alone and carry him along him everywhere, “We help him in every way possible.”

Rehman cannot hide his excitement over attending the RAW event and getting the opportunity to have his favorite star wrestle in front of him.

“I am taking a Sindhi topi and Ajrak for him as a gift from Pakistan. I hope he will like it,” he said.

He admits that it will also be a chance for him to ask Cena for any assistance in his treatment since the United States may have better and improved treatments or his condition. The entire family is expected to be in Ohio next week to meet the WWE champion. They’ve received a special invitation for July 4th, where Rehman will be in attendance as a special guest.

Make-A-Wish Foundation Pakistan founding president Ishtiaq Baig said, “He has promised to send a limousine for Rehman to bring him to the RAW event.”

His name will be announced before the fight, announcing him as a special guest from Pakistan.

Rehman is known for his love of news and current affairs programmes. Nimra buttressing this said, “He knows about everything going on in the world and he also watches National Geographic very fondly.”

He has requested that his siblings place posters of Cena all over his room wall, and always prone to fighting with his brother should he watch a fight alone.

The whole procedure to arrange a meeting with John Cena took about three months.

Baig said “Rehman’s family contacted us after which we sent an invitation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the US,” adding that the family visit will be a month-long one.

Nimra further highlighted the struggle to fulfil her brother’s wish to meet Cena… “We emailed the non-profit in the US about Rehman wanting to meet John Cena and they replied, asking us to contact their office in Pakistan.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has an affiliate in Pakistan and is present in 60 countries worldwide. It is popularly known as the largest wish granting organization for children and fulfils the most cherished wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

“We do not want any child to leave this world with an unfulfilled wish,” Baig clarified.
