Sartaj Aziz: Indian Bid For NSG Unsuccessful Due To Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts

Adviser to the Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz on Monday expressed his opinion regarding India’s failure to gain entry into the Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) blaming it on Pakistan’s rigorous lobbying.

Talking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, Aziz stated: “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif personally wrote letters to 17 prime ministers of different countries on the matter, which is on record.”

He added that more evidence is being gathered by security agencies against arrested Indian spy, Kulbhushan Jadhav. Legal proceedings against Jadhav are also expected to commence soon.

The NSG failed to reach an anonymous agreement on India’s membership bid on Thursday, following a few members of the international nuclear trade group insisting on complying with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) condition for entry.

The lack of consensus on the issue serves as a huge diplomatic setback for India and its supporters, the US, Japan and other Western countries, which appeared to be way too eager to get India admitted into the group.

The lack of consensus on the issue served as a serious diplomatic setback for India and its supporters such as the US, Japan, and some Western countries, who seemed eager to get India admitted into the club.

Both India and Pakistan are non-members of the NPT and are aspiring to gain membership of the 48-member international nuclear trade group.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, earlier this month, claimed that India was unopposed to “any country’s entrance into NSG based on merit, including Pakistan”, and was hoping that India would acquire membership of the group before the end of the year.

Referring to the issue of the Afghan Taliban, Aziz mentioned that the Pakistani government divided the militant group, Taliban into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ groups, with the government making efforts to push ‘good Taliban groups’ for a resumption of dialogue.

“In the prevailing situation, the Afghan Taliban do not seem interested in resuming talks,” he said. “The government has taken decisive action against all Taliban groups in tribal areas.”

Aziz added that the consultations with the security establishment on foreign policy are ‘normal’.

“Consultations with security establishment is a normal thing as United States [too] consult its security establishment in foreign policy matters.”
