Mystery of missing Pakistani army officer continues as Nepalese police clueless about his whereabouts

It has been a week since retired Army officer Colonel Habib Zahir went missing from Nepal and there is still no trace of him. Even the police are baffled as there are no traces of the officer and no leads which can help in finding him.

Tipak Thapa, an officer of the Nepalese police told reporters that CCTV footage of the day when the retired officer went missing, showed an unknown person receiving Col. Zahir at the Bhairahawa Airport near Lumbini. Thapa confirmed that Col. Zahir flew to Bhairahawa from Kathmandu, but the reason for going there is not known.

“The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the person who received him,” he said. According to the officer, Habib came down from the aircraft with his hand baggage and backpack.

The video footage also showed Col. Zahir talking to an unknown man at the exit gate before leaving with him to some unknown place. Pictures of Col. Zahir were shown to taxi drivers and other transport operators at the airport but none of them could give any useful information.

Spokesperson of Nepal’s interior ministry, Krishna Panthi, said the special bureau of Nepalese police could not find any clue so far. “We are not aware as to why Col Zahir went to Lumbini and what his purpose of visit to Nepal was. There was no room booked in his name in any hotel there,” he said.

Col. Zahir retired from the army in 2014 and had been working in Faisalabad. He recently started looking for a job again and for this purpose he put up his CV on LinkedIn and UN websites. Then a job offer from Nepal made him visit the country on April 6 and since that day he has been missing.
