A 23-year-old student of Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan, was killed by an angry mob over allegations that he was promoting Ahmadi faith on Facebook. Another student was severely injured by the vigilante mob who was supposedly trying to protect the religion.

According to the police report, thousands of students had joined hands in punishing the two victims, identified as Mashal and Abdullah. There were no police reports or complaints of blasphemy case against the victims and the students had killed them on mere rumors.

The incident occurred on Thursday within the university premises and the campus was immediately shut down following the incident. All the hostels were also vacated in order to avoid any escalation of violence.

So far around 45 people have been arrested in connections with the incident, according to Mardan District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed.

According to the details of the incident provided, the charged mob first got its hands on Abdullah and asked him to recite verses from the Holy Quran. Even though Abdullah repeatedly denied being an Ahmadi, the students still beat him.

The police was alerted of the incident and it reached the site and rescued Abdullah. The charged crowd then made its way to Mashal’s hostel room where he was at that time.

Mashal was severely tortured by the crowd and then someone shot him. He died at the scene and even then, the angry students pulled at and beat his body. In the end someone pulled his clothes off and his body lay naked on the ground.

The charged crowd wanted to set Mashal’s body on fire but the authorities intervened and stopped that from happening.

A student requesting anonymity said several leaders of the university’s student bodies were part of the attacking mob.
