Melbourne police comes under fire for shooting man holding toy gun

Police in Melbourne have been accused of unnecessarily killing a man—a situation which could have been avoided had they checked the facts. According to the details of the incident provided, police raided a swinger’s party and shot two people who were having sex at a Melbourne nightclub. The two victims were dressed as Joker and Harley Quinn from the film Suicide Squad.

However, the nightclub’s management has accused the police of overreacting, saying that the male victim was not armed and that he just had a toy gun with him, which he had gotten registered as part of his costume.

According to the police’s side of the story, they received multiple reports of a man, 35, carrying a gun in an upstairs room at a nightclub in Melbourne called Inflation, before 3 am on Sunday.

Acting on these reports, the police raided the room and when they jolted in, they found the couple engaged in sex. They became startled when the police rushed in and the man pointed the toy gun at the officers. After that the police fired several rounds at the man, hitting him in the torso and later tasering him.

Victoria Police Superintendent Lisa Hardeman said the local police arrived first but members of the Critical Incident Response team devised a plan.

“Police called on the male, the male took the firearm from his pants and aimed it at police,” she said. “A number of shots were fired. A number of police options were used after he was shot.”

Meanwhile the management of the nightclub is not happy with the way the police handled the situation and they reported that the club has now lodged a formal complaint with the Chief Commissioner of Police.
