Shehbaz Sharif takes notice of Multan ‘revenge rape’ case, orders strict action

The Chief Minister of Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the horrific revenge rape case which took place on the orders of a local village council or Panchayat. The CM has asked the authorities to take strict action against the suspects and assured their families of swift and exemplary justice.

Shehbaz Sharif flew to Multan after hearing about the case and visited the victims at the Women Crisis Center where he vowed to give out exemplary punishment to the suspects. “Those responsible [for the crime] will not be spared in any circumstance,” he said.

Shehbas also noted that the police did not take the matter seriously enough and ordered the suspension of the police officers who were involved in registering the case. He said that these officers were responsible for their negligence in ensuring swift action in the case.

The CM was told that the FIR for the first incident report was filed eight days after the event had taken place. “The incident shows the worst negligence on part of the police,” he lamented.

A three-member committee has been formed on the directives of the CM which will reach Multan today in order to probe the case further. The team has been given a timeline of 72 hours to submit a report on the case to the committee.

The horrific case in Multan came to light on Wednesday after which the police came into action and captured the suspects. According to the details of the case, a man had complained to the panchayat that his sister had been raped by his cousin. The panchayat ordered the rape of the sex offender’s sister by the victim’s brother and the dreadful justice was carried out in front of the entire panchayat.
