After the former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, was ouster from his office, his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was to contest on his seat, NA-120. However, it has been revealed that Kulsoom has been diagnosed with cancer and this may prove to be a set-back for the Sharif family.

A Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) source revealed on Tuesday that Kulsoom had been diagnosed with throat cancer and the disease was detected during her medical check-ups in London. The source added that the former first lady was likely to opt for chemotherapy instead of surgery and the entire treatment will likely take place in London. He added that this was just the initial diagnosis and more information will be available once further tests are conducted.

Kulsoom Nawaz had left for London unexpectedly on August 17 for a medical check-up. Her flight took off just hours ahead of her scheduled appearance before the Election Commission of Pakistan, where her nomination papers were to be reviewed for the upcoming NA-120 by-poll elections on Sept 17.

Now it has been revealed that her daughter, Maryam Nawaz will oversee the by-poll drive in her mother’s absence.

The NA-120 seat became vacant after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court in the Panamagate case on July 28. The SC blamed the former premier for concealing his salary from a Dubai-based company, which he claims that he never received.

Kulsoom Nawaz has mostly remained in the background but in the times of need, she has fully supported her husband’s political career like during the time when Musharaf had the entire Sharif clan behind bars.
