A terrible fire broke out in a seminary in Malaysia just before dawn on Thursday resulting in the death of 22 young students and two teachers. This incident is being termed as one of the country’s worst fire disasters for years.

The fire broke out at an Islamic religious school named Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah, which had been operating without a license. The school is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and all the victims were boys in their early teens.

According to reports, neighbors woke up to cries for help from the boys who were trapped inside the seminary. The fire broke out just before dawn and firefighters were able to put it out within an hour but till that time already major damage had been caused.

Shortly after the fire broke out, pictures started surfacing on the internet showing the charred building and ash-covered beds. According to firefighters, the youngsters tried to escape the burning building but failed at it.

“The children were desperately trying to escape the flames,” Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in a television interview. “There were metal grills which prevented them from exiting the burning building,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur Police chief Amar Singh said that “the bodies were totally burned”.

“Unfortunately there was only one entrance, so they could not escape. All the bodies were found lumped on one another,” he added.

Authorities are now working on finding out the cause of the blaze.
