Young gang of ‘social media’ drug dealers busted in Karachi

Police arrested a group of young men who were dealing in drugs through social media channels, among other means. This particular group was nabbed with the help of a secret undercover operation which was conducted by the Karachi police.

According to the details provided, one of the gang members sold drugs to what he thought was a regular customer. However, that customer turned out to be an undercover officer, and the suspect led the police to the rest of his gang members who were waiting for him at a club in Karachi.

The Darakhshan police have termed these peddlers as ‘social media drug dealers’, who have been using the social media platform extensively to sell their drugs. These drug dealers would create an event on Facebook and when the interested people would ask to join, this group would ask them whether they would want drugs at the party.

They would then bring drugs to the party and sell them to interested people. The group would also promise free delivery on their first order in order to win customers. Once the customers got hooked, they would also charge for delivering the drugs.

“This group comprises at least eight members; unfortunately all of them are young – between the ages of 20 and 25. Four of them have already been arrested,” explained District South police chief SSP Javed Akbar Riaz. “Most of them belonged to well-off families living in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shadman Town and North Nazimabad and are themselves drug addicts,” he told a local news reporter.

The group is now in custody and the police are now trying to get to their supplier.
