Autopsy report confirms Mardan victim raped before being murdered

After the Kasur incident of rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab, another similar case has emerged in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa district of Mardan. A young girl was found strangled to death in a sugarcane field in Mardan. Initially the police maintained that the girl had just been strangled to death but autopsy results showed that she had been raped before being killed.

A news conference was held on Wednesday by the Central Police Office (CPO), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Salahuddin Mehsud in which he said that the girl had gone missing last week and then her body was found the next day.

“Asma went missing in Gujjar Ghari area of Mardan on January 13 and her body was found the following afternoon,” he said, adding that they had sent the body for an autopsy which confirmed that the girl had been raped and then strangled.

Mehsud said that initial investigations indicated that the perpetrator had acted alone.

“Most probably the offender was a single man and his motives were sexual assault of the girl and the child was strangled afterwards,” he said. He further stated that DNA evidence had been collected from the victim’s body and it was being matched with the residents of that area.

An investigation team has been formed which will be headed by the DPO. The team will collect forensic evidence and ensure that the criminal is brought to justice. He refused to give out further details in the case, saying that the investigations are ongoing.

“Another 13-member committee has been formed, including members from six political parties of the area, and they have been tasked with monitoring the progress of police in this particular case,” he said.
