Aag goes big with Mitti

Aag, a budding Pakistani rock band, built on the imposing collaboration of the two Sheikh brothers, Haroon and Usman, has not taken much time to prove their worth on the country’s mainstream media, and have already sparked some interest overseas through
their remarkable cover of UK Bhangra maestro, Imran Khan’s hit song, Bewafa, in response to which, BBC Radio has already taken notice of the band.

However, for now, Aag has taken their dimensions to a much higher level after another of their cover songs, Junoon’s Mitti, was featured on the Sufi Rock band’s 20th anniversary album – which according to experts and critics has been billed to
have the likes of the original track.

In a recent interview with one of Pakistan’s local newspapers, Haroon, who commands the band’s vocals and guitars, admitted that the response for Mitti was above the band’s expectations but was a worthy reward to their hard work and commitment to the whole
project.

“The response has exceeded our expectations. We just tried the best we could, with a song that has been woven into our souls ever since forever.  Like the last cover (‘Bewafa’) we worked on, this too was an instinctual process. Covering these songs has helped
us develop a better understanding of music as a whole. When you start discovering the true essence of music you find that there are no boundaries.  We did not expect a response this big,” said Haroon.

When asked about why the band chose Mitti, Haroon said that the pick was natural, adding that Junoon had always been their major source of inspiration, but more over, having an opportunity to honour the band, which ruled Pakistan’s music industry for over
a decade, comes as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

As for the band’s opinion about current music scenario in the country, the duo felt that other groups and artists have to solely rely on single releases over the internet with concerts being cut down to minimum – given the current circumstances in the country.

Aag’s future may hold greater fortunes for the band bur for now the ensemble feels that if everything goes according to plan, they may come out with an album next year, as well as with a music video.
