The Pakistan People’s Party decided on Friday to have a separate party wing for south Punjab. The decision came in the wake of recently launched ‘Go Zardari Go’ campaign by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

Attended by Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Chaudhry Imtiaz Safdar Warraich Senator Babar Awan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Fauzia Wahab, Rukhsana Bangash, and Raja Riaz, the meeting took stock of the political situation and came
up with the decision of bifurcating the party structure.

The meeting also decided to appoint Makhdoom Shahabuddin as the president of southern Punjab. As for other office bearers, according to Qamar Zaman Kaira who talked to the journalists after the meeting, their names will be decided later.

The move is also significant due to the assertion of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani in September that the government will go for the creation of a new province. He had also said that the creation of a new province would end the sense of deprivation that
is felt in South Punjab.

Among other things, the party discussed in detail the recent moves made by PML-N whereby the latter intensified its campaign against the federal government. Highlighting the importance of parliament, Kaira was of the view that it is the best forum to discuss
the grievances of people.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said: “PML-N was fomenting turmoil and anarchy because it feared political isolation. People know about the PML-N’s past and how its leaders had fled the country.”

He also said that holding rallies against the PPP and its president could not harm the government. He said that PPP has its ideology and believes in political struggle that enables it to face every kind of situation.

“PPP has a long history of struggle and its leaders and workers were taken to the gallow, flogged and jailed, but dictators and rulers failed to eliminate it. PPP is an ideology and despite several attempts its enemies failed to remove it from the scene
and people’s hearts.”

As for Pakistan Tehrik Insaaf’s rally in Lahore, he said it was a good attempt to mobilise people.
