Reggaeton duo Calle 13 highlighted the night at the Latin Grammy on Wednesday in Las Vegas and attained a record nine awards despite limited radio play in some countries, including top honour album of the year for "Entren Los Que Quieran."
The group hailing from Puerto Rico appeared into the night with a leading ten nominations for the awards that had a good interpretation for honouring Latin music. The show started with a feet-thumping rendition of "Latino-America," earning a standing ovation
for the tune that celebrates their culture.
The tune was later on accredited by two awards with song of the year for song-writing and record of the year for recording of the music. After winning their Latin Grammys, the top honours in Latin Music, singer Rene Perez Calle 13’s independent spirit stated
"To all of Latin America … long live music, no to payola”. Perez dedicated one award "to those who don’t sell out and make real music," and after winning another one he said, "Long live true music."
"Entren Los Que Quieran" entitled as the album of the year seemed to be the best pick for the award, as the audiences left no room in cheering the artists. "Everybody Is Welcome" also was picked best urban album and the Group’s "Baile de los Pobres" (Dance
of the Poor) was named as the best urban song.
It looked clear from the very start of the ceremony that a major night was in store for Calle 13 as they swept up four other honours for best tropical song, alternative song, short-form music video and producer of the year.
Calle 13’s domination was all over the venue creating hype among the audiences and critics as to what may come next after more wins than any other artist in one Latin Grammy show. Other renowned artists did have their share for the awards. Venezuela’s Franco
de Vita, who won best male pop vocal album for "En Prima Fila” stated "lucky Calle 13 wasn’t in this category."
Shakira was also among the winners of the awards, as she won best female pop vocal album for her "Sale El Sol," and the Colombian singer was regarded with a special award for person of the year.
The event turned out to be a memorable one for Calle 13 and surely provide a boastful thrust to the group to contribute more to the rich genre of Latin music.
