Protest for indefinite period by PIA Employees

While facing the downfall of PIA and being a part of bad management decisions, the action committee of Pakistan International Airline employees union has planned
a protest from 18th of this month. They have decided to record protest for an indefinite period, countrywide.

The protest is for the down fall of PIA, which is the carrier of Pakistan’s national flag, and also because of the agreement of US $700 million, made
between PIA management and USA, for the supply of chemicals
, spares and other items.

“We are going on a protest from November 18 for an indefinite period against faulty decisions of the PIA management. We are compelled to
launch the protest as monthly loss of PIA has gone up to Rs2 billion from Rs1 billion,” said Shaukat Jamshed, president Society of Aircraft Engineers

He added "All PIA employees unions, including Air League, Pakistan Airline Pilots Association (Palpa), Unity Union,
Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Employees (Piace) and PIA CBA had jointly decided to stand up against the downfall of the organisation.
"

He clarifies that the 20,000 employees will not jam the machinery by going on strike. The agenda of the protest is withdrawal of the controversial
agreement for the supply of spares and other items, between USA and PIA management.

He gives a warning by saying," But if our demands are not met, the employees will go
on a strike in the second phase,”

The PIA spokesman, Sultan Ahmed, gives the statement that only two aircraft had been grounded, but
there are reports that PIA had grounded nine aircrafts, due to the unavailability of spares, which badly affected the flight schedules.

USA is providing US $700 million for 90 days credit. For this purpose, a letter of credit of US $2.5 million is
opened in favour of the company, which seems a heavy liability on the airline.

A senior PIA official, on conditions to keep his name secret, told that since the agreement had signed, 400 orders are placed for the supply
of spares for the aircrafts that has been grounded but the company had failed to complete even a single one.

President Asif Ali Zardari, also called a meeting last month to detain the increasing liabilities of PIA and to convert it into a profitable
organisation.
