Pakistan may send high-level delegation to Bangladesh

Since Bangladesh failed to fulfil their promise and voted against Pakistan on the European Union’s trade package. The Pakistani authorities had decided that they might send a high-level delegation to Bangladesh in order to convince Dhaka to take out their
vote against Pakistan at the World Trade Organization (WTO), as per sources.

A government representative, who didn’t wish to be named, as he was not allowed to share this information with media, said that, “We are expecting that Bangladesh may withdraw its opposition on EU trade package for Pakistan, however if it does not, then
a high-level delegation can leave for Dhaka to win their support on the trade package.”

The unnamed official also told that as per some media reports Bangladesh was taking into consideration to move back their opposition on European Union trade package for Pakistan and if that happens then it will be extremely beneficial for the Pakistani textile
makers. This is going to be treated as an aid measure subsequent to the floods of the previous year.

Earlier, 75 Pakistani export items were listed for export by EU under lower duty, but Bangladesh pleaded to World Trade Organization (WTO) not to give Generalised System of Preference (GSP) to Pakistan. The reason behind Bangladesh’s opposing this trade
package was that it would damage their textile exports to the European Union and other European countries.

As per Bangladesh, they have a strong fear that a small country like them would have a very bad effect with the approval of this grant to Pakistan. However, Pakistan is now looking to strongly pursue their case and for that they are ready to send a high-level
delegation that would comprise of both Foreign and Commerce Ministries officials to Dhaka.

Pakistan had already got the support of India on this EU package, which had earlier also voted against them. This change in approach of India came after Pakistan assured them that it’ll give them the status of the most favourite nation. TheEU package was
announced back in July-August 2010 when the floods caused lot of devastation in Pakistan.

WTO’s next council meeting will take place in the third week of November this year, in which final decision will be taken. Pakistan must get positive nod from WTO in order to make this package effective for them.
