Nawaz comes up with the demand of commission on ‘memogate’

With the memo-gate saga refusing to die down, chief of his faction of Muslim League, Nawaz Sharif demanded for a formation of a commission to probe the issue. His demand came in the wake of the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani’s assurance in the parliament
that Ambassador Hussain Haqqani has been summoned for explanation to the country’s leadership.

The PML-N, which is calling for an early election as well due to what it calls the ‘rampant corruption’ in the country, urged the Supreme Court of Pakistan to constitute a commission to probe into the issue as he said it could only be written by someone
in a government authority. Civil society, members of national and provincial assemblies, and senior judges, Nawaz demanded, be made part of the commission.

Nawaz Sharif, whose press release was read by Ahsan Iqbal – the deputy secretary general of the party, also said that the any attempt to undermine the sovereignty of the country would be foiled and be protected by all means. Iqbal also said: “no ambassador
could write such a letter without the approval of the president or the prime minister and alleged that President Asif Ali Zardari was the main character behind the scam.”

Gilani – however, asked the opposition not to see danger on every issue and said ‘his government would carry out its constitutional duty to protect national institutions.’ His thrust was that the government would do not allow any unconstitutional or undemocratic
move to derail democratic setup.

On the other hand, Information and Broadcasting Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan described the document authored by businessman Mansoor Ijaz as “engineered” and fabricated to bring about a “confrontation” between Paskistan’s state institutions.” Other ministers
also assured the opposition that whosoever was involved in it would be exposed.

It remains to be seen what the government says to the demand of the Muslim League-N to set up a commission. The Prime Minister’s assurance pertaining to the matter, it seems, did not satisfy the opposition which is already in loggerheads with the government
– with PML-N running ‘Go Zardari Go’ movement from the 19th October this year.
