Sherry Rehman: Pakistan’s new ambassador to USA

Former information minister and PPP leader, Sherry Rehman, has been appointed as Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, said a statement issued here on Wednesday. According to the statement Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appointed Sherry Rehman as
Pakistan Ambassador to the United States.

The appointment comes after Husain Haqqani was asked to resign by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the wake of the Memogate scandal. Gilani has approved the appointment.

Media reports circulating late Tuesday night had suggested that Iffat Imran Gardezi would be the temporary replacement for Haqqani. Gardezi is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington and assists the ambassador in the overall functioning
of the Embassy.

 Sherry Rehman met the Prime Minister before the appointment where Gilani expressed best wishes for her. On Tuesday, Hussain Haqqani resigned from the post over the memogate issue, during a high level meeting of civilian and military leadership.

Rehman had recently resumed the charge of Chairperson Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), for a period of three years. She was appointed by Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the society’s president.

"The Prime Minister is pleased to appoint Sherry Rehman as the new Ambassador to the United States," said the spokesman for the Prime Minister’s office, Akram Shaheedi.

Rehman, a former federal information minister and a well-known journalist, was a senior politician belonging to the ruling PPP. She was close to former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, and also regarded as close to Zardari although she resigned in 2009 following
differences with him over dealing with the media.

Foreign Policy used to be our strong suit but now it seems like government of Pakistan is not happy to leave any department in healthy mode. Now our foreign minister has a degree in hospitality management and our ambassador to US is a journalist! GREAT…!
