Astronomers have found two black holes, which are supposed to be the biggest ever found. Each of them is around 300m light years from Earth and has a combined mass equivalent to more than
30bn Suns.
These cosmological objects are some of the strangest so far in our known universe. The laws of quantum physics seem to break down here and space gets very strange.
Black holes are regions of spacetime that not even light can escape their gravity. A mathematically defined surface, called an event horizon, surrounds a black hole that marks the point
of no return.
These black holes begin as giant stars and after billions of years they collapse with each other into a point smaller than the full-stop, where nothing nearby can escape the pull of the
resulting gravity.
For any object even at some distance outside the edge, it would take all the effort to resist getting pulled into orbit around the hole.
The gravity inside these holes in on the sharp rate of increase and if you get near to any of these, your head would be pulled with more gravity than your feet because it was nearer the
hole.
The atoms in your hair would feel a stronger force than those in your toes. This difference in gravitational pull would quickly tear you apart into tiny fragments.
If an object wandered within the range of a black hole, the force of gravity would crush it. In the Milky Way, there are probably more than 10m dead stars, which could be candidates for
black holes.
However, the chances of our solar system running into one of them are less because the space is vast. Nobody knows how many planets have been destroyed inside a black hole.
