The Sitter: a disappointing entry by David Gordon Green
David Gordon Green’s The Sitter is a black comedy film and it is about a college student on suspension who is coaxed into babysitting the kids next doors. It was released on 9th December, 2011 worldwide and is produced by Michael De Luca. However,
the flick received poor ratings and mainly negative reviews.
The babysitting turned out to be an unforgettable overnight adventure through streets of New York City. The Sitter is a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express.
The cast includes Jonah Hill, Arl Graynor, Sam Rockwell and Max Records.
The film was scheduled to be released in theatres on August 5th but was pushed to December. The movie is a joint venture of Michael De Luca and 20th Century Fox.
The 25 million budgeted, The Sitter received mainly negative reviews and poor ratings.
Review Aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave it a poor rating. Only 22 percent of 69 critics gave the film positive reviews, with an average rating of 4.2 out of 10. The site’s general consensus states, “With its recycled plot, misguided gags, and formula performance
from Jonah Hill, The Sitter adds up to another disappointing entry from director David Gordon Green.”
IMDB gave the movie 6 out of 10 based on 25 critics while Meta Critic gave it a score of 38 out of 100.
James Barardinelli of Reel Views declared, “For every laugh offered by The Sitter, there are five minutes of boredom and at least one failed scene of would-be "dramatic" character building.”
Rick Groen of the Globe and Mail said, “Somehow, even in this foul climate, Hill manages to stay likeable, although the strain definitely shows. The same cannot be said of director David Gordon Green.”
However, Melissa Anderson of the Village Voice had a different opinion. She said, “Hill plays Noah with just the right amount of self-loathing, deep down convinced of his own merit, not needing to humiliate anyone to prove it.”
The Sitter has not lived up to its expectations but it is a good way of passing time with your friends and families.
