Is Entertainment News, the next big thing in Pakistan?

With the masses growing tiresome with regular news programming, could it be an opportunity for a different type of news channel or show to seize the moment.

Geo News, ARY News, Dawn News and every other news channel one can think of has been running the same shows, with the same format and sadly the same ominous, gloomy picture of the country for quite some time. Yet, at the same time almost every channel seems
to have branched into or at least tried providing viewers with a light hearted, humorous take on the chaos and turmoil that plagues this nation on a daily basis.

The interesting thing is that the public in Pakistan seems to have taken to the lighter segments, and where there is demand, supply will surely follow. Television shows such as
Hum Sub Umeed Say Hain, The Four Man Show and others have had earned themselves quite a regular following as they parody the daily happenings of the nation with their own unique blend of satire.

There are lookalikes, some rather hilariously catchy songs, skits and even mock interviews that could put shows such as Saturday Night Live to shame. While they have not become as regular as the daily news channel, and nor will they if one is honest, yet
at the same time there is still room for such shows to grow and grab a slice of the market share.

One may argue that the majority of the Pakistani public’s palate may not be ready for a more ‘satire based’ approach to the news such as the Jon Stewart show on CNN but the success of the previously mentioned televised programs do suggest that, in time,
that too may be a possibility.

Whether this is just a fad or a trend that will last is still up in the air but one cannot argue that Hum Sub Umeed Say Hain had a profound impact on society and the Four Man show is another pioneer in the entertainment news market of Pakistan.

We will just have to wait and see if one day everyone could share a laugh after the daily news shows are done.
