Show of Political Power; ANP organizes rally in Mardan

Mardan: (Saturday, December 31, 2011) After following the suit of other political parties bent upon showing their political power to each other, the Awami National Party (ANP) has also decided to enter the battle as the party had
a significant gathering at the Government Postgraduate College here today where among others, the party chief, Asfandyar Wali Khan also addressed the party members.

This was the third public meeting addressed by him after Swabi and Charsadda in recent weeks. He had shifted to Islamabad after surviving a suicide bombing in his village Wali Bagh in Charsadda district more than two years ago.
His visits to his native province are now rare due to security concerns.

The ANP endeavoured to show its strength in Mardan to outdo the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which recently staged a big public meeting in the city. The dissident ANP MNA Khwaja Mohammad Khan Hoti was the moving spirit behind the PTI rally where he announced
his resignation from the party and National Assembly.

Unlike the PTI which held its public meeting on the Railway Ground, the ANP staged its show at the College Ground. Rival political parties have criticised the ruling ANP for holding its meeting inside the Government Postgraduate College and politicising an
educational institution.

They also claimed that the ANP was using government resources for the purpose. Former federal minister Mohammad Azam Hoti, who is father of Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti, supervised the arrangements for the public gathering in Mardan. All ANP units in Mardan
district were asked to bring a fixed number of party workers and supporters to the public meeting. To make sure that women also participate in the rally in large numbers, female party workers went door-to-door and asked the womenfolk to attend the meeting.

Mardan city was decorated with ANP flags, billboard, banners and portraits of Asfandyar Wali, Ameer Haider Hoti, Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Azam Hoti and other party leaders. The chief minister, ANP Provincial President Afrasiab Khattak and other ANP leaders
also addressed the gathering.
